Don G's Tip For You

Windows 7 has hit the market like a storm. Techs are writing good things about the system and the pluses far out pace the negatives. Negatives, you mean there are negatives. Yes! As is true with all new operating systems there are bugs, problems, things that don't work as the architects predicted. What do I think. I have been working with 7 for about a year, the finished release since August 6, and my feelings are pretty simple. I have now converted my system over to Windows 7 and won't be looking back. When Windows XP was released I thought is was a vast improvement over ME. When Vista was released I new it was a vast improvement over XP, yes a vast improvement. It was more fluid, secure and basically did a better job all around. Windows 7 eclipses all of those and offers the most fluid powerful operating system I have had the pleasure of ever using. I will include OSX in that. While the Apple system and computers are great at handling certain functions, specifically, Video and Audio Editing, they don't hold a candle to the abilities of the Windows system. Windows does it all and Windows 7 does it better. The security is extremely tight. The operation is even more smooth and the power is unbelievable. I guess you would say I am happy. As I consider myself a power user and someone who has been working with Windows since version 1, yes I said versions 1. Bet most of you don't remember version 1. It took about 10 minutes for a window to open and even longer if you actually wanted to type something in the window, well those days are gone. 7 starts up in about 1 minute, that's from pressing the power button to turn the system on to actually being able to work. The new taskbar is cute, although I like my Rocket Dock even better. The system of libraries make for easy data backup and the restore system is excellent. Vista radically changed the way you could restore a problem computer and 7 makes this work even better. Transfer of files is quick and easy, much quicker than any operating system I have ever used. The next hurdle for a new system is drivers. As is true in all new systems, the various equipment manufacturers have not done their homework and made the changes that are required to meet the new system specs. With 7 it will attempt and usually find a way to install your equipment and make it work. I had a netbook that I install the Professional version on and my only problem was a flaky driver for the build in WIFI, low and behold, 7 took the task to heart and 24 hours after the problem started 7 downloaded a new driver and fixed it. Actually it fixed it so well it works better now than with the manufacturers original operating system. The machine if faster and operates more smoothly. That's a fact. The next great item is I have been able to install 7 on older machines with 512 MB of ram. Unlike Vista, which was a resource hog, 7 just works, no real degradation in speed or processing and no glitches worth mentioning. It is possible to purchase an upgrade copy of 7, which is cheaper than the full version, and it is possible to install it on XP machines. Here's the run, XP is not fully upgradeable, a clean install is going to happen, due to the increased security measure with 7. What the system will do is make a file on your hard drive called Windows.old and in that file you will normally find your Documents, Pictures, Favorites, basically all your old files that you can then simply copy to your new libraries. As always I recommend you make a backup of data files. I don't recommend the programs out there to move your old files and programs to your new system, as my experience is they move too much and can cause real problems. In the 15 upgrades I have completed so far not one glitch and all was done in less than one hour. Microsoft has a program call Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and I insist you download and run this program prior to upgrading. It will tell you what is compatible and what should be removed prior to upgrading. Windows 7 is a new vision and actually works as advertised, hope this helps, Don G
